No argument here that Wolverine is one cool cat and Hugh Jackman is the only man alive who can play him. But the character's last solo outing was X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and the less said about that the better. How does James Mangold's spin on the popular bad ass rate? Stick with me.
When Wolverine is summoned to Japan by an old acquaintance, he is embroiled in a conflict that forces him to confront his own demons.
OK, aside from fighting some jacked up robot samurai during the comic-book style conclusion, this is a straight up action flick that happens to feature a comic-book character. It's no Dark Knight, but it's pretty damn awesome. Especially the extended cut. Profanity. Violence. Serious tone. All good.
This is Hugh Jackman's role. He owns it. No one else can touch it. And he's pitch perfect here. This is a character piece that just happens to feature a superhero. Sure, the ending is better suited for a cartoon, but everything else works, and Jackman is the key. Plus there's ninjas. A lot of them.
I don't know what else to say? Thanks for bringing Famke Janssen back, if only as a flashback. And cheers for taking this great character seriously. If every Wolverine flick is this good, I'd watch a million of them.
A Good. No bullshit, bub.
