Prisoners is a movie I resisted watching for quite some time. Given that I'm a relatively new parent, the subject of child abduction proved daunting for someone who is more in line with traditional Friday night viewing. But more than a few encouraging words from my bro Matt Bellamy convinced me to give the flick a watch. How'd it stack up? Stick with me!
When Keller Dover's daughter and her friend go missing, he takes matters into his own hands as the police pursue multiple leads and the pressure mounts. But just how far will this desperate father go to protect his family?
This is Hugh Jackman's fucking movie. The fact he was denied an Oscar nomination for best actor disturbs me. He's a brilliant Wolverine, but Prisoners proves he's more than just a comic-book actor. I allied myself with him from the get go, and have no regrets. This is his movie.
I also appreciated the work of Jake Gyllenhall. The man rises to the occasion here, and pulls off a pretty bad ass role. He's a tough guy I never say coming, and one with a heart as well.
How about the rest of the movie? This is a David Fincher flick that wasn't made by David Fincher. Fortunately, Canadian director Denis Villeneuve (respect) is up to the challenge. This is the best "dark thriller" since Se7en, and on par with Fincher's Zodiac. Every frame and moment oozes dread and intensity. And there's more than a few twists and turns along the way. Plus it's glorious to look at. A beautiful motion picture.
Prisoners isn't a movie I'd revisit often, but it's one I'd catch at least once a year. It's an intense way to spend two-plus hours, and doesn't waste a minute. This is a Good, and deservedly so.
