Everybody likes a good ghost story, right? Well, how about a story where pretty much everyone is a ghost? That's the premise behind Cube and Splice director Vincenzo Natali's Haunter. Original, yes. Any good? Stick with me.
The ghost of a teenager who died years ago reaches out to the land of the living in order to save someone from suffering her same fate.
Think of Haunter as Groundhog Day with ghosts and a serial killer and no laughs whatsoever, at least for the first half. The movie starts out interesting enough, but whatever scares or suspense the story generates are nullified by the fact almost everyone in the flick is already dead. So you get about an hour and 45 minutes of creepy images and that's it.
Lame.
This is a beautiful looking movie with great performances by a competent cast, including Little Miss Sunshine herself, Abigail Breslin, Peter Outerbridge, and the great Stephen McHattie, who killed it in Pontypool and pretty much everything else he's in. The man looks like the bastard love child of Christopher Walken and Lance Henriksen, only scarier.
For one watch, Haunter is just OK, so I gotta give it a Bad. At least they tried to do something different.
