Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and
review at least one horror movie a day for
the month of
October . . . because he's awesome that way! Tonight, Bellamy takes on a movie made by some dude named Cronenberg. No, not THAT Cronenberg.
What a brilliantly timely concept, one that is so incredibly bizarre it wouldn't surprise me if one day something like this became a reality. So, what is that concept? How about this: in our increasingly growing celebrity obsessed culture, how far would you go to be close to them? To be just like them? Sure, plastic surgery is one way to go but that's all on the surface, what about those people who want to go deeper? In the world of 'Antiviral', you can share whatever disease your favourite celebrity has endured through a simple injection. Do you want to experience the violent flu your favourite pop star just had? Done. The grouping of cold sores Miss Hollywood tried her best to conceal? You got it! FINALLY, a movie for those turned on by herpes and chicken pox, about time! Cannibalism also gets touched on as well, because, what the heck, why not?
One very important point to note about this film is that it is directed by Brandon Cronenberg--name sound familiar? Yup, the son of acclaimed "body horror" director (and proud Canadian) David Cronenberg. Judging by 'Antiviral' it looks like the son is keen on following in his dad's footsteps and I am very happy about that. So long as he also manages to etch out a voice of his own in his future films then I think this is a young guy worth keeping a very close eye on. Oh, and if needles freak you out then this may be a film that'll make you squirm even more, just a heads up!
