Basement contributor Matt Bellamy has taken it upon himself to watch and
review at least one horror movie a day for
the month of October . . . because he's awesome that way! Tonight, Bellamy brings it all to a close with a modern horror and Halloween classic.
Happy Halloween, folks! What better movie to choose for the big, special day than one that celebrates the holiday better than any other? Trick r Treat is a movie that has unfortunately gone unseen by many which is a damn shame because everything that we love about and/or fear about this day is represented; always check your candy, don't blow out your pumpkin before midnight, pranks going wrong, and not turning your lights on for trick or treatres! These are all stories that are intertwined throughout the movie in anthology form, the characters all weave in and out of each story in some small way, from a deranged father who poisons candy and abducts children, to a grumpy, old curmudgeon of a man tormented for not taking part in Halloween, and a couple other ghoulish tales in between. The stories are fantastic but what really sets this film apart and makes it a true Halloween classic is the atmosphere that is dripping off of every frame, I swear you can almost smell the lit jack o' lanterns on every porch! There really aren't many movies actually made with this day in mind, sure, lots of horror movies are released in the month of October but how many even deal with Halloween and make you nostalgic for those days of dressing up and packing a pillow case of candy around your neighbourhood before gorging on it afterwards until you pass out into a candy induced coma? It's a rare thing, is the answer! If you haven't seen this movie yet you love Halloween, and I mean, really love it and miss those days of trick or treating then you need to make this a priority in your scary movie watching schedule, I guarantee it'll become a new favourite for you!
